Building Biology (in plain English) + My Detox Dwellings Healthy Home Method

If you’ve ever stood in a store aisle holding two “non-toxic” products thinking, “Okay… but which one is actually better?” — you’re not alone.
Building Biology is one of the frameworks that helps take the guessing out of healthier homes. But I don’t use it as a “label.” I use it as a lens: a way to assess what’s happening in your home and make practical changes that actually move the needle.
This is the Detox Dwellings method in plain English.
What is Building Biology?
Building Biology is a health-focused approach to homes that prioritizes low-tox materials, clean air, low moisture/mold risk, and overall indoor environmental quality—aiming to make indoor spaces as supportive as nature allows.
Is Building Biology a certification?
It’s commonly used as a set of principles and testing standards in the healthy-home world. I use it as part of my science-informed framework to guide decisions and reduce exposure.
What does it help with?
It helps you make smarter choices about indoor air quality, moisture/mold prevention, and materials/finishes—especially if you’re sensitive, have kids, or are building/remodeling.
What Building Biology is (and isn’t)
Building Biology isn’t a trend or a vibe—it’s a health-first way of thinking about buildings. It focuses on reducing indoor pollutants and exposures (air, moisture, materials) so your home supports your body instead of stressing it.
And it isn’t about panic, perfection, or replacing everything you own. I use it as a guiding framework alongside building science and practical, real-life decision-making—so you can take steps that actually feel doable.
The Detox Dwellings 3-Pillar Method
1) Air: Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Indoor air quality can affect sleep, focus, mood, allergies, and overall resilience. Most homes improve dramatically with:
better ventilation habits
smarter dust control
filtration where it matters most (especially bedrooms)
Common upgrades (link these phrases to your product picks):
true HEPA air purifier
MERV 13 HVAC filter
sealed HEPA vacuum
indoor air quality monitor
2) Moisture: Mold & Moisture Prevention
Moisture is one of the fastest ways a home becomes unhealthy. That’s why my approach is:
find where water is entering or lingering
fix it at the source
keep humidity in a healthy range
verify drying after any leak event
Common upgrades:
3) Materials: Low-tox finishes and smart product choices
This is where most people get overwhelmed. You don’t have to replace everything. You just need:
safer choices during remodels (paint, flooring, adhesives)
fewer fragranced products
materials that support indoor air, not fight it
Common upgrades:
What this looks like in real life (how I work)
When I’m helping a family, the goal is clarity—not perfection.
Step 1: Identify the biggest “health drains”
Musty smell? Persistent dust? New smell off-gassing? Humidity swings? Bad sleep?
Step 2: Prioritize based on impact
We handle the highest impact items first:
moisture issues
ventilation + filtration
materials/finishes and daily product exposure
Step 3: Build a “healthy home baseline”
So you’re not constantly researching. You have:
a short list of best practices
a safe product list
a plan for remodels and upgrades
Where to start (if you’re new here)
If you only do three things this month:
Track humidity with a digital hygrometer
Improve bedroom air with a true HEPA air purifier
Reduce fragrance + improve ventilation habits
That’s a strong foundation for most homes.
